M3: Justify the visual and audio effects used within the promo

After adding the shots I want to include in my documentary I then added transitions, cuts, title pages and music.

In my time line you can see that there are lots of cut away between the interviews and voice overs along with some shots from the film. The reason why I decided to do this was because when the interviewees were talking about a certain shot or something that happened in the film, I thought it will be best to add that particular thing in the evidence, so it can show the audience what they are talking about in case they haven't watched it.

Adding cutaways allowed me to give the audience an indication on what they were talking about and I also thought it would have been a boring documentary if I just put in the whole interview without any evidence from the film, or little clips, because I don't think it would have been engaging enough and it would have led the audience to be frustrated. The voice overs give a flow of the audio from the interview allowing there to not be any cuts or awkward silence moments. I made sure I was very careful in to making the cuts in the audio correctly.

Although having quick cuts from the interviews to some scenes/shots and vice versa is ideal and good, I also though of adding some transitions between them as well. Like for example, when I would then introduce a different interviewee, this will then allow it to have some sort of flow and rhythm to the audience that something different will occur, because having the sharp cuts would kind of make the audience confused and unsettled as they wouldn't have the clarification that one of the interviews has finished. As I edited my documentary, I watched it without the transitions and some of the cuts went really well but for some I believed needed transitions, just so it can go smoothly as they were quite sharp and I didn't like the quick cuts it had.

Once I have finished the editing, I watched it over and sensed it was missing music and identified it would have been much more relaxing and engaging if I had some sort of music going on in the background at a very low volume. After looking for the right one for a long period of time, I found one that was able to flow with the style of the documentary and make it understandable.

This is a screenshot I have taken of my timeline in its complete form before exporting it:

Gathering Feedback from Focus Groups

Once I finished the creation of my documentary, I decided to gain feedback through a focus group. A focus group is a face to face meeting with a group of individuals, where they gather to participate in a discussion about a product before it is launched, this enables them to provide feedback and make any slight changes. I believe that this is a good method for gaining feedback for my audio-visual promo because they are useful to gain detailed information about someones opinion and perceptions rather than having short answers on a survey. They can also save time and money, because you are able to gather all the members you want to gain feedback from rather then interviewing individuals separately and making them watch the audio-visual promo.

This is evidence for the focus group I did for my audio-visual promo:

I found my focus group for my audio-visual promo very useful, as I was able to get a wide range of opinions and slight improvements from members of my team. This was the feedback that I received from my focus group:

- My team members told me that they liked the way I edited the interview and shots from the actual film, as it flowed really well and allowed the audience to understand what the interviewees were talking about.
- The music was quite loud and it was quite hard to listen to what the interviewees were saying, they offered that I should adjust the sound just a little bit so that the audience are able to hear what the interviewees are saying.
- I should've interviewed the director of the film and see what she had to say about the film.
- When it came to interview the cinematographer, try not to add in what she didn't like about the film as it might make the audience not want to go and watch it.

I really appreciated the advice and opinions I have received from the focus group as it made me realise what I would be able to take on board next time. For example, when it comes to interviewing any members of the cast I must make sure they don't speak badly about themselves otherwise it could put some of the audience members of watching the actual product the interviewees are talking about. If I was to change this bit, it would require me to re-shoot the whole interview and make sure the interviewee isn't speaking badly about her role. This effect would change the whole section of the audio-visual promo, because if the cinematographer spoke positively about herself it would make the audience want to go out their way to watch the film she has filmed.

If I was to interview the director and ask her questions about her role in the production and how she felt about the film, this will lead to another shoot to take place and require me to add it in the audio-visual product and edit it out so it links with shots of the film. I am not able to do this now due to the fact the client has asked that my documentary must only be 5 minutes long and this would go over the time frame given, but I know for next time I should make sure I interview a wide range of cast and crew members as possible and based on the information and answers they give I can cut it out and make it fit in to the time frame.

The changes I am able to make through post-production would definitely be adjusting the sound track levels in my audio-visual promo. The effect that it would have on the completion of the project as the audience would be able to hear the interviewees speaking properly and allow the transitions from the interviews to the shots from the film to flow properly and allow the audience to listen properly without noticing the jump and change.

I really valued my feedback and I would definitely take all the advice and feedback on board for next time as it would make me really successful and produce better audio-visual products.
