When it comes to watching and analysing trailers, they all have common elements and set of expectations depending on the genre of the film; such as quick cuts between interesting moments in the film and a non-diegetic sound that is parallel to what audio-visual content is presenting. The two examples of trailers that I will be analysing is the 'Mission Impossible: Fallout' & 'Incredibles 2' trailer.
'Mission Impossible: Fallout' is a trailer for an action/adventure film and has fast cuts and transitions between actions scenes as it allows the audience to become interested and intrigued to what is going on, this adds the trailer because it leaves the audience to wonder what will happen, or how things happened. Due to it being a 6th sequel it has the 'signature music' which allows the audience to recognise it and familiarise themselves with the film, and also has fast paced music that links with the quick cuts and action scenes, this adds to the tension to the audience and makes them sit on the edge of the seats, impatiently waiting for the film to come out.
Due to the fact it is also an adventure films the trailer includes modern city locations they are filming in, in order to show the adventure side. The cities they are usually filmed in are known to be popular and recognisable, this will allow the audience to identify and of them and familiarise themselves with it. The establishing locations they show are usually filmed at a wide, high angle shot, in order to show the whole location and establish to the audience where scenes will be taken place. Action films are also expected to have elements of good vs. evil, this is usually presented through high and low angle shots as it shows who has more dominate and the quick cuts between the fights and chase scenes emphasises on the fast movement between the characters.
The other trailer I have analysed is the 'Incredibles 2' trailer. This is a trailer of an action and science fiction film. In this trailer it has the conventions of an action film as I mentioned, but it has a wide range of science fiction films that makes it completely different. The conventions of science fiction films include: elements of good vs. evil, futuristic props, an alternative world and individual having powers. Science fiction films include a wide range of alternative worlds and powers. Incredibles 2 includes a lot of this element and due to the fact that it is an animation it is fairly more believable as it is not real.
From the knowledge, fans gathered from the first film of the Incredibles, we follow the journey of a nuclear family, but they aren't an ordinary family as they are superheroes and are needed to save their country. We have the father who is incredibly big and can lift practically anything heavy, the mother who is elastically flexible and is able to catch things and save people do to stretching parts of her body, the son who can run really fast and save people in the nick of time, the daughter who can defend herself through bubbles and the baby who is just about to discover their superpowers in the 2nd film as we discover from the trailer. As we know, humans wont be able to do it as its impossible but due to it is a science fiction film it is expected to have these elements of powers and being in an alternative universe.
The representation in both of these action trailer films is very clear, we understand from the fast paced action and quick cuts that there would be a lot of fighting and disruption, this engages the audience even more because they are sequels to the film, the audience have chosen a side they want to defend and keeps them at the edge of their seat as they really want to see what will happen and who will win.
However, I believe that there is a lack of representation in the two films, in the mission impossible trailer we mainly see males fighting and shows the audience that mainly they have power and control in society, this is also presented in the Incredibles 2 trailer where they guy decides to choose elastic girl to take on a role rather than Mr. Incredible and he responds with 'better than me?', this shows the viewers that society has this idea and norm that men will always do a better job at something and women aren't better than them as they are usually presented as 'weak' and 'useless'. I really like the fact that Incredibles 2 decided to give the female the main role as not only does it allow women to show their strong side, but its an animation film mainly aimed at younger children so it can give the younger audience at that age that there should be gender equality as both genders can do such roles.
When it comes to Music videos, their genre conventions are conveyed in different ways compared to other audio-visual content, but although its different with different artists and producers but it is still clear about what the genre is and what they want their music video to be about. The two music videos I will be analysing is Little Mix's songs 'Wings' and 'Hair'.
Little Mix are the first X factor group winners and after appearing on the show, the song 'Wings' was their first official music video that was released. The music video was released in 2012, the artists in the music video are clothed in fashionable, stylish and mainstream outfits, so maybe during the time those were the type of clothes that would have been in style and fashionable and due to the fact that it is a girl group it is expected that young female teenagers are fans of this girl group so seeing them dressed like this would usually inspire the fans to want to style out and wear clothes like them, this was fairly predictable as fans would usually use their favourite artists as their inspiration towards many things.
In the music video the artists are portrayed as happy, energetic and content with life and themselves. This is common against pop music videos as they generate excitement and links with the lyrics of the song as well, as they are saying that they should not let any individual affect them, so the actions of the artists show that they are happy and care free. This creates a bond with the audience as they use this as their inspiration and the upbeat soundtrack engages them and usually makes the audience feel as if they are in the music video themselves, this is a common element of pop music videos because its as if there is a bond create between the artists and the audience which will then want to make the audience buy the album that is being promoted, especially if they are huge fans of the artists.
Another Little Mix music video I decided to analyse was 'Hair'. When watching pop girl band music videos, the lyrics are normally based around love, relationships or heartbreaks. Due to the fact that girl pop bands are aimed at young teenagers they may be going through the same thing and will usually get assurance from these music videos, as the artists could be their inspiration and when they see that their favourite girl band is okay after a breakup, it gives them hope that they would be too. This is known to be an example of a heartbreak music video.
In both of the Little Mix music videos they are talking about something to make their audiences feel better. In the first music video 'Wings' it talks about how they shouldn't let anyone's negative opinion get to them and they should be themselves, this is represented through their body language and how they are all happy and dancing, without a care in the world. Due to the fact that their music is expected to be aimed at young teenage girls, their outfits are represented in a way to show their fashion and when young females see this they would obviously want to look like them or be similar. This will not only help the music company promote their music and get the fans and members of the audience to purchase their album, but allow audience to engage with the music and keep an eye out for the next music.
The genre convention of an ident are easy to identify depending on the channel, the two ident channels that I decided to analyse were ITV and CBeebies.
The ITV Channel is known to be a channel for entertainment, this allows us to easily identify the conventions that may occur in their different idents. One of the idents that I found is of a low, medium close up shot of feet's dancing, this illustrates creativity that is usually shown on ITV channels. Due to the fact that there is a lot of dancing, this could indicate to the audience what programme is going to be shown next. The use of colour of costume in this ident is very bold and bright, not only does it match with the colour of the logo but is mainly used to grab the audiences attention as its bold and engaging. As ITV is an entertaining channel, this ident has been created to do so, so that it introduces what's to come and also meet the requirements of the show.
I decided to also analysis the CBeebies ident as the conventions are really predictable. Due to the fact that it is a children's show, you would expect the ident to be silly and maybe make them laugh in order to attract their attention.
Idents, trailers and music all have different messages and meanings due to the different styles they are used to be created and the purpose they have. However regardless, they all have specific conventions and genres and audiences become familiarised with them and are able to understand the message or style it is portraying and able to benefit the production companies and artists.
